A Letter from Sara

The following letter awaited our arrival.

Goings-on at Stone Camp -- 7/26/2011 4 am

Dear Webster-Wrights, Kuehm-McKinstrys, et al.

The sons gathered for Tom's birthday plus Lauren, Becca, San, Ed Rubenstine, Billy Nettles and his sons Alex and William.  Everyone fit and no bat sightings!

The well was drilled by Ted Rolfes and he is having it tested.  He thinks we hit an "ancient salt water pocket" and it may have to be sealed off.  He will email me the results.  I am drinking it, Tom is still using the bottled water. Run hose during the day to flush the well.

Wi-fi installed by Time-Warner.

Can't expand the diningroom table with leaves -- seems bolted closed at base????

Please water newly planted lilac bush (to cover the well head) and the grape vine near the wood pile.  Farmers Union has a 1/2 pricesale on all plants.  Also planted Karen's blueberries (coals to Newcastle) in rock pockets by stone stairway.  Filled with loam that Deric hauled in and mulched with lake "seaweed".  Maybe water them also.
Deric says we need o use gas stove in the boathouse or eventually they'll remove the free gas tank.  Have to light oven with a match - and Deric has to turn on the gas valve.  Refrigerator was in great use for all the beer and soda consumned this week.

Ed Kallop came for cocktails the night of Tom's B'day.  Brought me his On to Paris We Speed.  His book Golden Days of Wayne, Maine is missing (maybe at Maple Ave) and now is out of print. So if we see a copy in a used bookstore - or the old postcard of "Stone Camp" (Kitten has one)please snatch it up.

Bloody hot here til 7/24.  Told Deric Marshall's idea re installing an attic fan - he'll pick one up and install on roof.

Stained picnic table green and new Addarondick chairs zesty yellow (Tom's choice) but still don't know what our color theme should be.

Ed told us Alice Johnson (Ralph's beautiful Mexican wife) used to stroll his vegetable garden (no longer) with a cocktail in a "diaphanous gown".  She fell down the steps.  Mo/iuddonotl heard the commotion.  The flood of 1936 destabilized the boathouse which became Ralph's pre-occupation to save.  Deric found the words "Boathouse roof repaired in 1983 - _____ and _______ Johnson.  I think the kids were Lisa, Eric and ?

Deric will plant grass seed on the yard that the well diggers ripped up.  The loam he had Mark bring in was not screened so the stones have to be removed first.

Jay Leland who installed the stone steps is to have his workmen backc to saw off the the cement steps at the boathouse so the barn door will shut.

Paul Morgan needs instruction on boathouse wiring.  See if
you like the brass sconces from Maple Avenue to put on either side of the bed.  Antique bed has a dress and bedside table which Deric brough over (his daughter Jillian no longer wants it - drawers stick_ He bought it from an ad 5 years ago and will put dresser in Karen's and Marshall's room if you like.  When I told Deric you had tried to move up the big white dresser but couldn't get it up the stairs he said, "Sure you can."  But then he and sone Dustin couldn't either.  Deric will bring white dresser through the window if you prefer that to Deric's dresser.
Karen, the bathroom floor brightens the room and changes it to a "loved space".  Great to have all the boards in the wall to put bathroom stuff on.  Billy Nettle says in their Bahamian house they left the walls open also and then painted the squares of wood in between to match the floor colors????

Billy also suggests you just moor the sailboat out front where you can just swim out and will use it more.  He loved the constant wind and was dying to "borrow the neighbors sailfish".

Neighbors - Mo and Martha may be annoyed with me.  We landed and took off in the seaplane at the end of our dock -- all day!  Also, Martha was watching when William and I used her dock - she waved but I should have asked first.

We picked blueberries twice at Steep Hill Farm.  They specialize in "high bush blueberries" and the varieties in season were Patriots and Northlanders.  Northlanders are smaller and supposedly tastier. I couldn't tell the difference.  We also picked the small wild blueberries on Androscoggin Island with the boys.

So bloody hot here - 7/21 thru 24 that I moved the wicker lounge to the porch and covered with foam and quilt and slept.  Ed slept on the porch swing.  There was a graveyard of insects under every light left on at night during the heat wave.  Now the wicker lounge is used during the day.

We were all dying to see Karen's new kayak - so sleek - please send a phone photo.  And Tristan says, "Mom never buys herself anything", so I suspect Marsh got it for her.

I don't think I'll make it here for the house tour.  Dr. Sweet's trial starts 9/6.  So if you all aren't here just tell Ann Lossett where the key will be.

After Deric finishes the porch roof and the rail, he'll start on the kitchen porch.  What do you think about having stairs facing the driveway?  Tell him.  Also, he'll build in trash bins and enlarge the porch -- maybe expand deck to under window and put bins there.  Also, he'll build up basement opening to keep water out - door iced closed last year.  New basement door.

Told Ed we need to enter the camp this winter to repair the boathouse.  He will talk to Paul - his snowplow/yard person.  I need to get Paul's number and ask him to keep our driveway plowed so Deric can get through.

Sky is just light-filled.  Hard to leave.  Enjoy and make any and all changes/improvements.

Thanks for all your help and presence.

Love,

Sara
